Can You Lose Weight by Eating Candy?

Can You Lose Weight By Eating Candy? Here's our Answer...

THE SHORT ANSWER: Yes, you can absolutely lose weight by eating candy, as long as you follow some basic rules. The most important one – stay in a caloric deficit. Many people struggle with this because it requires a lot of willpower. The simplest tip I can give you is to start ‘fasting,’ aka, restricting your eating time window to only a few hours per day, where you can eat anything you want (yes, even candy), but nothing outside of that time window. Here’s the Thing With Dieting…

Probably none of us is too keen on dieting. I mean, who likes giving up on all of his favorite foods and just follow some strict rules of some diet regime which restricts you from eating anything that doesn’t fit its criteria. At least, I know I don’t like it.

During weight loss, many of us encounter numerous obstacles due to the basic rules of the diet. Prohibitions on the intake of certain foods, strictly defined period of consuming meals, eating only specific foods, monitoring our every meal and let’s not forget the feeling of guilt if we „get off the track“ and eat something we are „not allowed“.

All of this is quite tiring and affects us to the point where many of us don’t even want to start with a diet, and those who start it can’t wait for the diet to end, after which most regain more pounds than they lost. All of these can be discouraging, so it is important to make our weight loss program painless as possible in order to adhere it, make it sustainable and not lose focus and will power.

The problem is that we like to feel free, and although dieting doesn’t necessarily take away our freedom in that sense, many diets don’t offer flexibility which we need in order to feel comfortable. We don’t want to feel restricted in what we should eat because that could ultimately have an adverse effect.

For example, like many of us, I have a sweet tooth. Simply, I’m weak on sweets and I have a hard time giving up on them completely. Every time I restrained myself from eating sweets in order to lose weight it had a completely different and ultimately negative effect.

It would lead to craving sweets even more to the point where I couldn’t control the cravings and I would end up binge eating. And that is something we don’t want. Not only it can lead to undoing the weight loss progress, but more importantly, it can lead to negative feelings of guilt and feeling bad about ourself which can lead to completely giving up on diet and getting back to the old habits.

But, what if I tell you that you don’t have to restrict yourself of all of your favorite foods, as in my case sweets, and still sucessfully lose weight. Sounds unrealistic, right? Well, in the text below I will explain why is that possible and why dieting and trying to lose weight shouldn’t be such a torturing thing, and how to make your dieting program long-lasting and as painless as possible. So let’s get started.

Problems with Diets

Dieting for most people is hard and they have a negative connotation towards it. But why is that?

The main problem with most of the diets is their restrictive nature about what should we eat.

„You shouldn’t eat this, this, and this and you should ONLY eat this“- that’s how most diets work. This can ultimately make us feel anxious about what food should we eat and even worse, it can lead to us feeling guilty and disappointed in ourselves if we have eaten something that we „shouldn’t have”.That can result in a loss of motivation and completely quitting the weight loss program.

For example, as I mentioned before, I had a hard time giving up sweets completely. As I forbid myself sweets, I would have a hard time keeping the discipline and cravings under control, which would ultimately lead to the loss of control and binge eating. That would make me feel guilty and disappointed in myself to the point where I would lose all motivation and want to completely give up the dieting.

Furthermore, I would try to repress those negative feelings with even more eating which would start the downward spiral and I would end up in even worse situations than I was at the start of the diet.

Therefore, the most important thing about the dieting is to make it sustainable long term with as least amount of active effort as possible. Well, you may ask yourself how is that possible? Don’t worry, we will explain it bellow.

How losing weight works?

It is actually pretty simple. In order to lose weight, you have to burn more energy ( calories) than you take in.

Therefore, your body will use energy stored in your excess weight which will lead to weight loss. We can put the body in that state by eating less or by burning more calories with exercise. So which one is better?

Well, there is no black and white answer. We need both in order to make our weight loss program stick and make it long-lasting. For example, most diets only focus on the dieting part and reducing your calorie intake. Although that might work and you will lose some weight, it is physically and psychically exhausting.

Also, you might often feel hungry, which will ultimately lead to failing the diet plan and our set goals. Therefore, we need a diet that we can follow effortlessly for a longer period of time.

What about exercising? What I mean by exercising doesn’t have to be something extreme like going to the gym 7 days a week or running a marathon. It just means to be more ACTIVE in general.

Its pretty simple actually, and you can add it to daily life without much time consumption. It can be something simple as going for a walk or using your bike instead of using your car, or something like going for an evening walk instead of spending your evening watching TV.

It’s important just to move and be more active. If you like playing sports and going to the gym even better. But for us who don’t belong to that category, it is enough just to start small and move more and be active more. You will feel better and you will look better, thus making the process of losing weight more enjoyable.

What should you eat?

Everything is allowed but in moderation. Yes, this includes candy. Yes, you can lose weight by eating candy, as long as you’re in a caloric deficit. Moderation is key for any long-lasting diet. That doesn’t mean that your diet should mainly consist of sweets, fast food, and sodas. It should consist of vegetables, lean meat, whole grains, and fruits. B

ut if you have a craving for a cookie here and there, that’s OK as long as you don’t eat the whole bag. There is no need for you to completely throw out those kinds of food, just be moderate and make your diet as healthy as possible with a lot of vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains. Combine that with moderate exercise and you’re golden.

Dieting Hacks

  • Find products on the market which have sugars substituted with some (preferably natural) sweeteners, such as stevia, to reduce calorie intake
  • Eat food that will make you feel full longer, such as meals with a lot of protein (protein digests slower)
  • Satisfy your chocolate cravings by consuming dark chocolate with a large percentage of cocoa ( around 70%)
  • If you know that you have a problem with discipline, keep out of the house everything that you could end up binge eating, such as sweets, cookies, ice cream, etc.
